NGSS Writing Team Leader: Richard Duschl

Richard A. Duschl is Waterbury Chair Professor of Secondary Education in the College of Education at Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining the PSU faculty, Richard was Chair of Science Education at King’s College London and served on the faculty at Rutgers, Vanderbilt and the University of Pittsburgh. From 2009 to 2011 Richard was President of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST). Early in his career Dr. Duschl also taught high school earth science in Charles County and middle school science in East Lansing, Michigan.

Dr. Duschl is known for his research on assessment, argumentation discourse practices, and the application of history and philosophy of science to science education. Twice, Dr. Duschl has received the ‘JRST Award’ for the outstanding research article published in the Journal of Research in Science Teaching. He served for more than a decade as Editor of the research journal Science Education and as Editor for TC Press “Ways of Knowing in Science and Math” book series. He recently served as Chair of the National Research Council committee that wrote the research synthesis report Taking Science to School: Learning and Teaching Science in Grades K-8 (National Academies Press, 2007) and was part of the 2009 NAEP Science Framework planning committee.

Dr. Duschl received his bachelor and doctorate degrees in earth science education and science education, respectively, from University of Maryland at College Park. He earned his master’s degree from Michigan State University.
